KATHAK DANCE HISTORY - ABOUT KATHAK NRITYA
Origins of Kathak
Kathak is the classical dance form that prevails in the North of India. The word Kathak is derived from “katha,” meaning storytelling. The expression “Katha kahe so Kathak” translates to “whoever tells a story in a dance form with song is a Kathak.” Thus, the movements of hands (mudra) and body, along with facial expressions (abhinaya), were used to tell stories with song and music, giving birth to Kathak and Kathakars. Originally, the artists known as Kathakars told mythological stories (harikatha) in the Hindu temples of Northern India. Consequently, their art was deeply rooted in Hindu religion, philosophy, and spirituality.
Evolution and Transmission of Kathak
Additionally, the Kathakars’ knowledge, including compositions and choreography, was passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition. Today, Kathak dance classes continue this tradition by teaching new generations the intricate art of storytelling through dance. Moreover, this transmission of knowledge ensures that the cultural and spiritual essence of Kathak remains intact. Therefore, the continuity of Kathak’s tradition is preserved, allowing the dance form to flourish in modern times.
Structure of Kathak
The Kathak presentation is divided into three distinct parts: natya (drama), nritta (pure dance), and nritya (expression/mimetic). Firstly, nritta is a logical extension of words and imagery of movements. Furthermore, the inclusion of natya gives the dance substance. Nritya, on the other hand, combines dancing and action while interpreting the story. Moreover, in the delineation of these aspects, the rasa or emotion charges the atmosphere, radiating ananda (bliss) upon union with God. Known for its intricate compositions, rapid chakkars or bhramaris (pirouettes), complex tatkar (footwork), and stylized facial expressions, Kathak hails from three gharanas: Banaras, Lucknow, and Jaipur. Each gharana has its unique focus, such as rhythmic permutations in Jaipur or moods and emotions in Lucknow. Students in Kathak dance classes learn these distinct elements, perfecting their technique and understanding of the dance form.
Influence and Evolution of Kathak
Between the 12th and 18th centuries, Kathak was practiced in the magnificent palaces of Mughal emperors and earlier in those of Hindu rulers. Initially, it was a devotional temple art; however, it also became a court dance intended to entertain powerful rulers. Consequently, the dance style enriched itself by borrowing from Persian cultural elements. As a result, the aesthetics of Kathak evolved in accordance with the aesthetics of Muslim culture. The dance form focuses a lot on intricate leg movements, performed skillfully and straight-legged. Additionally, dancers wear ghungroos (ankle bells), which produce a characteristic sound with each movement. The Lucknow gharana, influenced by Awadh royalty, emphasizes graceful movements and delicate hand placements. Many of these historical influences are emphasized in Kathak dance classes, ensuring that students appreciate the rich heritage of the dance.
Kathak Theme & Technique
With the help of dance, music, and mime, these dancers narrate stories based on Hindu mythologies by using dance as a platform. Moreover, it was used as a form of devotional expression to the Hindu Gods. Furthermore, they enhanced their dances with intricate hand gestures and vivid facial expressions.
The important elements of Kathak include linear and circular extensions of the body that are symbolized by controlled body and hand coordination. Additionally, it involves rhythmic footwork to the beat of music and fast-paced pirouettes, which are always carried out with elegance and grace. When the artist is in a deep state of trance and spiritual reckoning, they mesmerize the audience with their performance. These techniques are taught in Kathak dance classes, where students learn to master the art of storytelling through their movements.
Kathak Ghungroos
Kathak ghungroos or ghungrus, small bells tied around a dancer’s ankles, are distinct from those used in other Indian dance styles. Unlike others, they are not affixed to a pad or strip of leather but are instead individually woven along a thick string. Typically, there are a hundred bells on each ankle. However, during the initial stages of learning or for children, strings with twenty-five or fifty bells may be used to help the dancer adjust to them. Additionally, there can be up to a hundred and fifty bells on each ankle, but larger numbers are generally unsuitable due to the distance of the upper bells from impact. This distance delays the sounds and can make them difficult to control, as they are more likely to sound at unwanted moments. In Kathak dance classes, students start with fewer ghungroos and gradually increase the number as they become more proficient.
Evolution of Kathak Costumes
The costumes of Kathak dance have also evolved along with dance styles. Traditionally, Hindu female costumes consist of a sari, either worn in an everyday style or tied up to allow greater freedom of movement for dancing. However, a lengha choli with an odhni is more common nowadays. On the other hand, the Mughal costume for women is an angarkha, similar to a churidar kurta, but tighter fitting above the waist to enhance the lower half during spins. Additionally, a small peaked cap and bandi, to enhance the bust line, may also be worn, along with a belt made of zari or precious stones.
Male Costumes in Kathak
The traditional Hindu costume for men is a dhoti tied in the Bengali style, featuring many pleats. Men may also wear a bandi. Conversely, the Mughal costume is a kurta that is at least knee-length, along with a churidar. Furthermore, men can also wear an angarkha, and older variety costumes can include a small peaked cap as well. This diversity in attire reflects the rich cultural influences and historical evolution of Kathak. In Kathak dance classes, students learn about the significance of these costumes and how they enhance the performance.
Kathak Music
This dance style makes great use of Hindustani musical compositions, which are often specifically composed for performances. Instruments like the flute, harmonium, sitar, and tablas are usually used for performances. Moreover, the compositions consist of bhajans, thumris, and padas. In Kathak dance classes, students are introduced to these musical elements, learning how to synchronize their movements with the music.
PAIPA – A Premier Kathak Learning Destination

Kathak: A Blend of Hindu and Muslim Influences
Kathak today is a beautiful amalgamation of Hindu and Muslim influences. It carries inspirations from both religions. Drama, mood, sentiment, technique, and rhythm to music are the main aspects of this dance form. The current form of Kathak is linked to the Mughal era. During that period, the facial expressions and gestures gained in subtlety. The artist was indeed able to express a theme in many different ways with a wide range of nuances. Consequently, the aspect of pure dance (nritta) gained in sophistication and speed.
The Complexity and Preservation of Kathak
As a result, the rhythm, movements, and pirouettes became more complex. Additionally, Kathak also became permeated with elegant Urdu poetry along with the poems in Braj. One of the last Mughal emperors, Wajid Ali Shah, himself composed songs on Krishna in Braj. Today, Kathak dance classes help keep this rich tradition alive, teaching students the intricate techniques and cultural significance of the dance. By preserving these elements, modern Kathak practitioners ensure that this classical dance form continues to thrive and enchant audiences worldwide.
Conclusion
Nowadays, Kathak is the only Indian classical dance form that presents a strong symbiosis of Hindu and Muslim cultures. This unique blend continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Through Kathak dance classes, students not only learn the technical skills of the dance but also gain an appreciation for its deep cultural roots and historical evolution.

For those seeking to learn Kathak, PAIPA (Pradeep Adwani’s Institute for Performing Arts) is one of the best places in India. Under the guidance of Guru Pradeep Adwani, students receive comprehensive training in Kathak. Guru Pradeep Adwani, renowned for his expertise and dedication, ensures that each student not only masters the technical aspects of Kathak but also understands its cultural and spiritual significance. The institute offers a nurturing environment where students can grow as dancers and storytellers. Through personalized attention and a structured curriculum, PAIPA provides an ideal setting for both beginners and advanced learners to excel in Kathak.
