HISTORY OF JAZZ DANCE
Michael Jackson danced it.
John Travolta danced it.
“Chicago” showed it.
Jazz is a common dance to this day.
Typical Jazz stereotypes are hats, canes, and the sound of a saxophone.
Characteristics of Jazz Dance are strong core, high kicks and leaps, and extensions of classical ballet.
JAZZ dance originated some 400 years ago in 1600’s with the Africans who were brought over to America on slave-ships and it was an expression of their emotions and their physicality using isolations and body movements that were indicative of their culture.
In 1930-1960’s, JAZZ dance surged into musical theatre and certain choreographers like George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jack Cole, Hanya Holm, Helen Tamiris, Michael Kidd, Jerome Robbins, and Bob Fosse are using it in their musical theatre choreography and making it into their own expression of choreography and art. They started using their style of isolations and contractions, so this really made a popular ride in the nationalite and as JAZZ has progressed it fed into the profession of music and dance.
As music and dance enhances, JAZZ enhances and choreographers feel JAZZ music and dance in a different way and then create different dance movements.
