JAZZ dance originated some 400 years ago in 1600’s with the Africans who were brought over to America on slave-ships and it was an expression of their emotions and their physicality using isolations and body movements that were indicative of their culture.

In 1930-1960’s, JAZZ dance surged into musical theatre and certain choreographers like George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jack Cole, Hanya Holm, Helen Tamiris, Michael Kidd, Jerome Robbins, and Bob Fosse are using it in their musical theatre choreography and making it into their own expression of choreography and art. They started using their style of isolations and contractions, so this really made a popular ride in the nationalite and as JAZZ has progressed it fed into the profession of music and dance

More Info On Jazz dance - Dance style

Jazz dancing requires great flexibility. To do Jazz dance loosen your muscles and wake up your body for dancing. By warming up with this routine, you will increase your flexibility and decrease your risk of injury. While performing these stretches, avoid bouncing or rocking, which will increase muscle tension and lead to injury. Instead, try to hold the stetches while focusing on your breathing. Use your exhale to move into each stretch more deeply, but never exceed your own bodys limitations.

Some steps for warmup before doing JAZZ dance

  • Stand with legs apart in second position, distributing your weight evenly between both legs.
  • Bending at the waist, stretch down toward your right leg.
  • Allow the upper body to drop toward the right leg, making contact if possible.
  • Let the left hand rest beside the right ankle.
  • Your right hand should rest softly on your back, allowing for a nice stretch along the chest.
  • Make sure your knees remain straight.
  • Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, without forcing.
